Yesterday, we headed around to the south end of the island to spend some time in Waimea Canyon. It was lovely, but it was a lot of driving and all of my navigators were sleepy or woozy from the switchback turns.
We made it all the way up to the end of the road at Pu'u o Kila Lookout over the Kalalau Valley. The book touted it as "one of the greatest views in the Pacific," but that does not do it justice.
At some point between the land and the clouds, the sea is separated from the sky, but you cannot tell quite where. The length of the valley and depth of the view give you an odd feeling of vertigo when standing on the edge of the cliff.
And you really can stand at the edge. The actual lookout point is up a ramp with railings all around, but just a few steps down the Pihea Trail, you can stand at the edge of the ridge and there is nothing between you and valley but a long fall.
What it is really hard to do is get a picture of people and the valley without making them sit in the red dirt. Matt and I didn't want to.
But Brooke and Chris were willing.

Even though I was there, I did not realize that Matt had taken the opportunity to create a waterfall for the tourists on the catamarans to enjoy.
